Plans are underway for 2020.
The 2014 reunion was a great success. We expect the next reunion to be bigger and better!

Thank you to our hosts in Perivolia!
The Stratoudakis family at the Oasis Hotel were wonderful hosts. They made us feel like family and made an extra effort to accomodate us. We recommend them to any traveler looking for a welcoming atmosphere in Chania. The hotel is a quick cab ride from the city center, and also convenient to many beaches in Nea Hora, Galata, and in between.

Highlights of the 2014 reunion

Walking tour: Our cousin Katerina Fountoulakis graciously covered the cost of a walking tour of the city. Approximately 16 people participated. Thank you Katerina and Stellio!

Welcome night: Our Cretan relatives greeted us as we arrived, and we spent the evening enjoying a wonderful dinner at the Keramos Restaurant in Malaxa. This is located in the foothills where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset view of the city of Chania. Authentic Cretan music was provided by Andreas Lilikakis and company!

Back to Our Roots! We took a trip to our ancestral home in Askifou. We attended a Doxology at the church in Amoudari, Agios Pateleimonos and Panagia. Lunch followed at the Panorama restaurant, a traditional Sfakiano restaurant. A guest speaker, one of the priests from Askifou, discussed the history of our family and the region.

A visit to Venizelos’ tomb. Afterwrds, some of us enjoyed a sunset meze at the adjacent Koukouvagia restaurant.

On to Theriso! We travelled to Theriso by Funtrain and filled it to capacity - 61 people! We included a history lesson geared for the children on the way there. We held a trisagio service at the church of the Panagia.
We spent the afternoon touring the village, with everyone choosing their own lunch venue afterwards.

Hiking The bus left for Omalo by 6:30 am. Samarian Gorge hikers proceeded down the wooden stairs, the xyloskalo, while others waited for the bus to return and take us to Sfakia on the southern coast.

We had about an hour in Sfakia before catching the ferry to the idyllic village of Loutro. We had several hours to relax and enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

Everyone reunited on the last ferry boat from Agia Roumeli, as it stopped in Loutro and picked up the rest of our group. The day
ended with a ferry ride back to Sfakia and the bus ride back to Chania.

To the Beach! We took two buses to Elafonisi, located on the southwest corner of Crete. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe, running a neckandneck tie with Balos Beach, west of Chania.

Dinner in Falassarna After a day on the beach we had dinner in Falassarna for a sunset meal at the Panorama Hotel, where our hosts were Vassiliki and Antoni Matzorakis Tsaporakis. They were wonderful hosts and served an amazing meal. I cannot recommend them highly enough to anyone looking to spend a day or two in Falasarna. Vassiliki is a cousin to the Cleveland Matzorkis family.

Farewell Dinner

Where else could we say goodbye to everyone but in Therisso? Over 150 people came to my father’s village to share in fellowship, great food and wine. The Adartis Resaurant was a gracious host. The food kept coming and wine decanters were always full.

There were here speeches by Alex Sofianos and Nikos Giannikakis, the owner of the restaurant, where our family’s history and the history of the village were discussed. We danced to live music and celebrated our heritage, our families and our love for one another until the time came to say farewell until next time.
